This Ph.D. thesis aims to gain insight into the processes determining the accumulation of Technetium-99 (99Tc), a radioactive isotope, in aquatic plants in order to understand their role in the biogeochemical cycling of 99Tc. Questions addressed are related to the accumulation dynamics and resulting steady-state conditions, in the radioecology characterized by the transfer factor. Contents include: Update, elimination, and biotransformed forms of 99Tc in duckweed. Uptake kinetics of 99Tc in duckweed. Influence of salinity and eutrophication on the bioaccumulation of 99Tc in duckweed. Evaluation of the transfer factor of 99Tc from water to aquatic plants.
