This volume is a first attempt to describe the occupation years of the three Baltic republics in a joint effort and a variety of different perspectives. The ways and means of occupation, including deportations and ethnic cleansing are discussed, together with problems of collaboration. Cultural values were lost through war and occupation.
Minorities, long living in the area, were attacked and differences between new and old minorities arose. The impact of occupations on culture forms an important part of the contributions. The values and modes of thinking are analyzed in a number of ways. The final section addresses the modalities of silent, persistent resistance, in particular youth culture, but also the adherence to national traditions. The new movements arising in the 1980s are represented the by the environmentalists.
