Several orchids are national flowers. Given the large number of orchids (in the hundreds of thousands counting species and hybrids), the relatively few to acquire a national flower status are a very select group indeed. Even in this exalted company, Vanda Miss Joaquim, Singapore's National Flower, stands out.
However, beyond its beauty and patriotic value, the National Flower is a plant with an interesting history, complex biology and major horticultural value. This book was written to celebrate its beauty, recall its history, explain its biological complexity and rationalize its horticulture. It is also intended to be a repository of the knowledge which has accumulated about Vanda Miss Joaquim.
