This thesis examines monitoring and assessment of trace elements in the atmosphere. Within this wide scope, it focuses on source apportionment and the calibration of biomonitors considering the dynamic behavior in the environment. Emphasis is placed on biomonitoring, and the relevance of nuclear analytical techniques in this framework. A new and powerful method is presented for source apportionment on the basis of multi-element data for air filter samples. Two new concepts, which express numerically the biological response of biomonitors to different availability environments are presented.
