In 1992, Michael Heseltine announced that the vast majority of British coalmines were going to close. We immediately recognized what dire consequences there would be for the local economy of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire if this plan went ahead.

A storm of protest brought a series of mass demonstrations to London. As a result, there was a stay of execution, followed by some extravagant promises about government funding to help the coalfield areas recover from the devastation caused by the loss of the mining industry.
