This report deals with the different ways in which children handle and experience numbers and outlines a study carried out within the phenomenographic research framework. The main focus is on describing and analysing the different ways in which children handle numbers and, with this as a base, showing how they experience the meaning of numbers in a problem solving situation. 38 six year old children, were interviewed and videotaped solving different types of mathematical word problems.
