Immigration at current levels is turning Britain into a country very ill-at-ease with itself. It imports poverty, increases social tensions, crime, public health problems such as TB and HIV, and creates parallel communities. Anthony Browne argues for a zero net immigration policy and demolishes many of the myths used to justify mass immigration, such as: Britain does not have a declining population or workforce and does not suffer from generalized labor shortages; Immigration is no solution to an ageing society because immigrants grown old too; Immigration boosts the total size of the economy but does nothing to boost GDP per capita. It depresses the wages of those in the lowest income groups; Immigration at current levels increases overcrowding in one of the world's most densely crowded countries, adding to congestion and the housing crisis; It deprives developing nations of their most educated and energetic citizens. He argues that the immigration policy must be in the interests of the British people, should be robust enough to withstand honest debate, and should be able to command widespread public support. Unfortunately the system we have fails on all three counts: it is based primarily on the interests of immigrants, cannot withstand open debate, and is strongly opposed by most British people.
