This volume combines the proceedings of the International Conference on disasters and disaster management in Ancient Israel / Palestine, Egypt and the Ancient Near East, which of 4 October to 6 October 2010 was held in Leipzig. Scientists from various disciplines to examine the concepts of disaster in the ancient world, the impact of disasters on society, the possible dynamics and cultural impact. They give insight into the current state of research on productivity and destructiveness of catastrophes in the ancient world, including the possibility that disasters have been used as topoi in ideological, mythological and theological discourse. The contributions in this volume represent the first step towards a cultural history of disasters in the ancient world.
