Pieridae is one of the major world-wide families, containing more than one thousand species, well represented in the temperate regions but predominantly widespread in the tropics. The butterflies in this family are recognized by venation, bifid tarsal claws and by having six walking legs. Most of them are white, yellow or orange, these colors being largely due to pterin pigments, which in butterflies are only found in Pieridae.
