This doctoral dissertation summarizes research relevant for the issue of gender in the United Nations' Multidimensional Peacekeeping Operations (PKOs). It includes statistics and information, as well as theoretical and methological perspectives. The report was done to be use as background material for the preparatory workshop on gender in PKOs, held in Uppsala on June 1st, 2nd and 3rd, 1999. Three main areas are examined. The first concerns gender and the organization at the United Nations headquarters. The second area deals with the operation in the field and women's' particular contributions. The final area discusses two negative aspects of peacekeeping: increased degrees of prostitution and violence against women in the countries hosting the PKOs. The conclusions suggests both policy and research areas that are important in mainstreaming gender in multidimensional peacekeeping operations.
