The aim of this doctoral thesis is to establish the function of the motif of laughter and derision in the first-century Roman novel Satyrica, from the conviction that an investigation of a formally defined motif may offer a new angle for studying the character of a literary work. The motif is investigated by means of a linear close reading of all passages that contain explicit mention of laughter and derision, with particular attention to personage interaction, genre, allusions to other literature, and narrative strategy.
