This work aims to improve and enhance our knowledge about those Byzantine aristocrats who are attested as having lived in, or having had the intention to retire to an Athonite monastery. Until now, no general research investigating the fate and activities of persons of distinct origin mentioned in the Athonite acts has ever been attempted.

The author provides new knowledge about the internal logic that determined and commanded the attitudes of the orthodox aristocrats to the isolated peninsula of Athos, elucidating their contribution to its transformation in a crucible of the late and post-Byzantine Balkan spirituality.

In English and Greek.
