Since the 1950s, the traditional monocentric city has changed into a multinodal urban area: an area with multiple with multiple regional centers. This change has led to new urban areas whereby the traditionally clear structure is gradually transformed into complex multinodal structures. The research presented in this book describes the process by how this change takes place. By defining the processes of transformation, the emergence of conurbation, interaction, interference and system formation it becomes clear how single cities and conglomerations evolve into multinodal urban structures.
