Description:

Louis C. Jonker reviewed in this book more sophisticated and nuanced way to the heuristic objective of "identity" in the interpretation of the Chronicles in the Hebrew Bible apply. The author examines not only the possibilities and limitations of different sociological models for this purpose, but also offers a more nuanced analysis of the socio-historical context of the origin of late Persian scriptures, by distinguishing between four socio-historical planes of existence at this time. It is found that varying the power structure at these different levels operated and that this contributed to a multi-stage process of identity negotiation. Louis C. Jonker demonstrates the utility of the chosen methodological approach in its analysis of the Chronicles, and shows that it is a potential for the study of other corpora of the Hebrew Bible.
