Eloquent Students tells the story of how persuasive communication has been taught at the student nations of Uppsala. In the 17th and 18th centuries this was done through formal orations and disputations. Later on debating societies were organized. This study also highlights the uses of persuasive academic celebrations. The student-run nations of Sweden are unique in the European academic setting. In Uppsala and Lund the membership was mandatory 1663-2010, and the nations continue to thrive as places where young people enjoy student life and take on various responsibilities. All through their long history the nations have been arenas for conviviality and mutual support, but they have also been places for gathering experience and knowledge.
