The Biblical tradition has a strong tension between what is promised and hoped for, and what is actually experienced: So there is a strong discrepancy between the world as it should be and as it is. In this first volume of his two-volume work, which has its origin in a series of lectures that Andrew Chester was at Oxford, he focuses on the Hebrew Bible and central issues of eschatology, such as the question of the threat of the destruction of world by God on the one hand and God's promise on the other hand, to create a paradise. The author also deals with death as a state of separation from God and the attempt to find hope and a renewed life thereafter, as well as the promise of a changed world, and whether it can withstand the comparison to the real world.
