Kvantkemiska Forskargruppen (The Quantum Chemistry Group) was established by Per-Olov Lowdin (1916-2000) at Uppsala University on July 1, 1955. It was a unique entity: a self-governing body with a separate economy from the university and with its own research agenda.

Fifty years have passed since the beginning, Lowdin and several of the pioneers have passed away, and we have felt an imperative to collect and present essential elements from the early years.
