In order to interpret biblical narratives, exegetes increasingly deploy methods of literary criticism, especially from the field of narratology. Due to the different approaches and terminologies, it is difficult to get a good grasp of current research. Sönke Finnern gives a systematic introduction to current interdisciplinary research in narratology and develops a comprehensive and detailed method for the analysis of narratives. Setting, plot, characters, perspective and reception of narratives are dealt with consistently from a cognitive point of view.
The cognitive approach of asking “how should the recipient perceive the narrative” enables the integration of historical-critical questions. The categories of description established by the author are discussed using the text of Matthew 28 as an example. The author concludes his study with a proposal for a reorganization of methods in exegesis and in textual sciences in general.
