This study addresses issues concerning religion in the public sphere, brough about by debates over the perceived resurgence of religion and the post-secular. The aim is to analyze the participation of religion actors in the public arena, using the debate pages of three Swedish newspapers, Dagens Nyheter, Svenska Dagbladet and Expressen, as the empirical material. Building on Jose Casanova's concept public religions and Stig Hjarvard's mediaztion theory among others, 639 opinion pieces signed by religious actors have been analyzed.
The dissertation contains both a quantitative overview of the religious actors' participation in the debate - who they are, what they write about and how - and three qualitative case studies. These focus the debate over same-sex marriage, the specific character and place of the national church in Swedish debate, and the participation of religious minorities.
