Arranged as a poem-by-poem commentary, this book maintains that Samuel Daniel's sonnet sequence Delia displays considerable rhetorical and thematic patterning, the single poems being connected with one another by subtle associative links. In the process, Daniel's extensive debt to his predecessors is re-examined, severeal new spurces are proposed, and the unexpected meaning many poems derive from the tradition of sixteenth-century sonneteering is discussed in detail.
