From the rule of Hadrian in the 2nd Century CE up until the end of Diocletian’s reign 200 years later, the use of petitions was strictly formalized and played an important role in the administration and legislation of the Roman Empire. Much of the documentation of the extensive exchange between the subjects and emperors through petition and response, however, has been lost over time. This book seeks to reconstruct some of these communications based on available original sources.
