The representatives of the scarabaeoid family Geotrupidae, as it is traditionally understood, are at present assigned in two independent families Bolboceratidae and Geotrupidae. The family Geotrupidae contains the monotypical subfamily Lethrinae distributed in the Palaearctic region, and the subfamily Geotrupinae distributed worldwide. No substantial revisional work on the geotrupine genera Odontotrypes and Phelotrupes has been done since 1905. Considering the intensive coleopterological collecting in China and the Himalayas in recent years, and the lack of taxonomic study that would include all species described since the last revision, a critical revision of these two genera and the pertinent literature was considered useful.Entomology
