Nine marble Roman cinerary urns from Stockholm collections are described and given their place within a chronological and stylistic framework. The urns cover a period from around the middle of the first century of our era to c. 200 A.D. Although few in number and in various states of preservation, the urns are distributed in such a way as to illustrate the stages of development of Roman cinerary urns of the Imperial period.
Additions to and restorations of some of the urns, which once belonged to the Piranesi collection, are discussed. Aspects of the inscriptions are considered against the background of sepulchral inscriptures in general from Rome.
