This collection of essays owes its origin to a conference, Sage & Emperor: Plutarch & Trajan, held at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The conference was sponsored by the Department of Classics of the University, with the cooperation of the International Plutarch Society, and received generous support from the Vice chancellor for research and the departments of Art, History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies of the University. The organizers and the participants are grateful to these bodies for their generosity. Special mention should be given to Prof. George Houston, Vice Chancellor Thomas Isenhour, and Prof. Frances Titchener for encouragement in a time of need. The speakers and participants made this conference memorable through their papers, their challenging questions, and their Plutarchan delight in conversation. Some of the papers presented at that time will appear in other venues; of those offered here, most have been rewritten for publication in this collection.
