In this study, the approach of Haagmans (2000) for the creation of a synthetic earth and its gravity field is analyzed, implemented and validated. Moreover, the application of the model is discussed. The emphasis of this report is on the theoretical formulation of the method and on the study of the influences of assumptions, approximations and parameter choices. On the basis of a thorough literature study, the method was analyzed and improved at some points. Contents include: Synthetic earth topography (SET), the Gravity potential of the Synthetic earth (SEP), the Synthetic Earth shape (SES), the Generation of gravity field functionals, the generation of SES and SEP at different spatial resolutions, Summary and recommendations.
