The main purpose of this doctoral dissertation is to investigate whether the UN has reacted in a consistent manner to foreign military interventions. In Part I, foreign military intervention is defined and criteria for the selection of cases to be included in the study are formulated. Part II examines the United Nations' reactions to the six cases through an investigation of how the Security Council and the General Assembly responded to the interventions. In Part III, the basic hypothesis is tested with the purpose of evaluating whether it can explain the common features as well as the differences between the United Nations' reactions to the six cases. The testing shows that the basic hypothesis is untenable.
